Works and is cheaper in the long run and much less wasteful to buy this as a reusable part than to repeatedly pay a premium for headphones with a permanently wired in version.

Simply plug and play - couldn't be simpler. Very happy.

It's not a normal volume control or attenuator, but I'm keeping it anyway because it's inexpensive and well made. I'll tell you what I think it is. I think it's wired not like a potentiometer with a wiper going to ground, but as a variable series resistance. I'm guessing it was intended as a pad for headphones or line input with an impedance of 600-5k ohm range. I'm using it going into an electric guitar amp which has around one meg-ohm input impedance. So, imagine a 1k - 2k pot wired in series. It would do absolutely nothing, which is what it does in my case (10% series resistance is about 1dB change, too small to be detected by ear). I can hear no volume change, AND it has the feature of turning entirely off at the extreme end of its range.As I said, I think it's intended as a pad for a headphone or line in sort of load. If you don't know what a pad it, it cuts the amplitude so you don't overload a pre-amp. I could test it out in five minutes with an ohmmeter but I won't waste the time. Pads are always designed for specific load, but they're not saying. I'm keeping it anyway. It's cute and I'll I keep it handy for some eventual use.The demotion of two stars is because this item should have been described properly. It's for a technical usage and should be described technically. I'm sure it has a specific function, but it's definitely not an all-purpose volume control with a wiper going to ground.Posted an edit five hours later:Hey, I couldn't be lazy. All the above is correct. I tested further. This was designed for headphone impedance, which is roughly 8-1000 ohms, a big range, and it's a series resistance. It's not for the hi-impedance guitar amp I wanted to use it for with an input impedance of 1,000,000 ohms! I tried it with my headphones and it's perfect for that, or MAYBE a line level input like an RCA phono input that says "aux", or "tape", provide that the input impedance is in the headphone range (most are a bit higher, so it may not reduce volume as much until it suddenly goes off).However, this is all they said in their blurb: "This technique allows you to pick your own comfort level for volume. It's great for situations when your existing headphones do not have a way to control the volume. Set it as loud or quiet as you want! "Hardly sufficient information. They said headphones, but didn't emphasize that's all it is for. Rating stands.For the non-electronic engineer types: I saw some one-star reviews of many products (maybe even this) where reviewers complain that thay cannot INCREASE the volume. Well, this is what called a "passive" device. There are no electronics involved, and it can only lower volume. It's not a battery powered amplifier. An "active" device is what those people want, actually just a headphone amp. Again, lousy product information on the part of the seller. And pretty dumb reviewers, too, sounding so expert and righteous.It's a pretty attractive device, well made and cheap! I'll raise it to 4 stars.

This product is a complete scam! It offers no volume control whatsoever. It goes completely mute when turned all the way down, but just nudge it up a bit and it goes instantly full volume! If I wanted a mute button, I'd have bought a mute button. I wanted a volume control, this is advertised as a volume control, but it doesn't control volume.
