Simple fix for Fuel Evap Leak code on 2002 Acura MDX
We have 152K miles on our 2002 Acura MDX. The other day the Check Engine light came on (for the first time ever) and so I plugged in the OBDII reader and saw code P1456 "Fuel Tank EVAP System Leak". This code is normally caused by a poorly-sealing gas cap that allows fuel vapors to leak out. The system detects a pressure drop in the tank and throws the error code. Sometimes, the error can be fixed by tightening the cap. However, if the cap is older, then the rubber seal in the cap is often hard/cracked and can no longer provide a good seal.Upon inspecting my cap, sure enough, the seal was completely flattened after 18 years of use. You can see the comparison between the old and new seals in my photos where the new seal has a clearly defined V-shaped gap between the upper and lower surfaces whereas the old seal is completely collapsed. The cap itself is in perfect shape --only the seal is worn. At first I thought I'd have to buy a new cap ($40 from Honda) or a cheaper aftermarket cap. There are a lot of complaints that the cheaper aftermarket caps are hit and miss so I avoided that option. Fortunately, I stumbled across this replacement seal on Amazon and it worked perfectly to fix the vapor leak and error code! I could tell a difference immediately upon reinstalling the gas cap and could feel the new gasket applying pressure to the filler neck until the cap clicked. Even better, when I removed the cap to fill the tank a few days later, I heard the "whoosh" of the tank pressure being relieved as I unscrewed the cap. That's a sound I haven't heard from the car in many years --a sure sign that my gas cap seal was well-worn many years ago but not quite enough to throw the error code until last week. The new seal is nitrile rubber (fuel resistant) and is a perfect match to the OEM seal. This is a GREAT product that saves you $30 over a new OEM cap and also saves you from throwing a perfectly good OEM cap in the trash. Couldn't be happier to have found this simple, effective product!

Restores the OEM gas cap
When my original gas cap failed on my 2003 Honda Odyssey I replaced it with a Stant fuel cap which failed after 15 months. Fortunately, I saved the original Honda fuel cap, so I was able to replace the original seal with the RKX seal and now it works perfectly and the dash warning has turned off.

Decent
Replacing the fuel cap seal was easy. Made the cap seal a lot tighter. It's hard to take the cap off now. The seal itself works but cosmetics of it seems like they use an old mold, there were rubber burs on it.

Lasted 2 weeks
Fit like OEM but after 2 weeks got a check engine light for Evap. O ring stretched after about 4 fill ups.

No Check Engine Light
The RKX Gas Cap replacement seal turned off the check engine light in my vehicle. Although the gasket was slightly larger than the OEM gasket, it worked. The gasket allowed me to keep the OEM gas cap.
