I’m not clear on whether you use the mitt to scrub the soap, or use the soap first, rinse it off and then follow with the mitt to exfoliate.

Thanks for your question.

I understand your question very well. It's actually a very common one for first time users. Don't worry I will give you a few tips to help you get the best benefits from your purchase.

Firstly it is important to establish that the Moroccan Black Soap is different from regular synthetic soap and therefore it's application is slightly different. The soap is in a gel like formulation as oppose to the hard bar shaped soaps you're may be used to. Just like any other natural soap, Moroccan Black Soap generates very little foam due to the high oil content.

With the caveat out of the way, let's prepare your skin for application.

1) Firstly, soak your body in hot water for about 5 minutes in order to ensure it is soft and fully opened up the skin pores.
2) Then scoop out about 10g of the gel using your fingers and place it onto one of your palms. Then soften the gel by rubbing both hands together until the gel is evenly softened up. Take care not to spill any of it into the water.
3) Then apply the soap on the desired part of the body by evenly rubbing it with your hands until the soap disappears into the skin. Take care not to wash it off with water as you will need to let it sit for some time.
4) Leave the soap on for 5 minutes to allow enough time for the gel to be absorbed into the moist skin and do it's magic.
5) Then wear the Kessa Mit on one hand and soak it thoroughly in hot water to make it malleable and ready for use. The mitt will shrink and become thicker after being soaked but that's normal with these materials.
6)  Then scrub the skin gently in a back and forth motion with the Kessa. It may feel uncomfortable at first as it may be a different experience to any other scrub you used previously, but trust me it is safe and you won't lose your skin! Be firm but don't over do it. Experiment until you can exfoliate your skin without pain. You will get used to it the second time you use this mitt.
7) You should notice some beads of rolled up deadskin peeling off. 
8) The amount you see coming off depends on various factors but the common ones are as follows:
a) If your skin is healthy or you regularly exfoliate, then you may notice very little dead skin - that's fine because we are trying to remove bad skin not skin itself!
b) You have not properly prepped your skin - Go back to steps 1-4.
c) You may also see less dead skin if you have not applied enough firm pressure. 
9) After you are done with exfoliating with the mit and at this point you are disgusted with the amount of skin on the bath water, then it is time to rinse off your body with Luke warm water to allow the skin to be cleansed and close the cleaned up pores
10) After rinsing, take care to only dub the skin with a smooth towel to dry the mositure of your skin as opposed to rubbing it as your skin might be sensitive from the exfoliation.
11) Don't forget to moisturise your skin thoroughly with a natural oil to quickly replenish it with the required nutrients. We recommend an Organic oil like Moroccan Argan oil. You can take a look in our web store - www.amazon.co.uk/alhoor

13) Ensure you drain out any excess water from the tub to prolong its life. Also make sure you clean the mitt thoroughly with water. It is common to have dead skin to pile up inside the mitt just like how a grater peels of the cheese and some of it piles up on the underside of the tool.

If you regularly exfoliate (once or twice a week), over time you will notice less and less dead skin coming off, and that's what we want to see as this a sign of a healthy and clean skin.
