Dedication To The Breed
We have 2 dogs... a Boxer and a Rottweiler. After I bought "The Boxer - Family Favorite" by the same publisher (Wiley & Sons), I decided I must have this one regarding my other favorite breed... the Rottweiler. A good looking hard cover book with 250+ pages of excellent info. Pictures adorn most pages. Topics include: History, breeding, basic care, health & symptoms, activities for you & your dog, training tips, size & incredible strength, enjoyment, and so much more. It is clearly evident that authors Thompson and Michels are dedicated to the breed. Anyone owning or considering the Rottweiler as a pet should have this book. I have half a dozen books on the breed and I find myself reaching for this one the most. Any dog-lover will admire all the pictures of these big beautiful animals and understandable print. A wonderful read.

What! No color photos of the beautiful Rottweiler!
Very disappointed, that the only color photo of this beautiful breed, was on the cover. All black and white photos inside. All the information in the book, I've read in other books...nothing new.

Not as pleasing a read as expected...
First off, this is an American written and published book, which I didn't realise until after it arrived. Not that this usually makes any diffence when I buy a book, but this time round I was a bit disappointed with the contents. The writers appear to have been sponsored by the American Rottweiler Club as they just seem to be selling it right through the book. There are pages of how to show your dog, and pages upon pages of Champion lines, names, titles, terminology etc. Far too many pages are devoted to the various past and present show winners. I honestly don't see why this is included in this particular book, as the title is ''The Rottweiler: Centuries of Service'', and I expected it to be about the long history of the dog, right up to the present day.Yes, it briefly covers the origins of the Rottweiler, but almost all books about Rottweilers have this same content, and so as it read the same as previous books, I skipped over the history. Then, we descended back into the showing and breeding side of things, again talking in great length naming names of champions and past winners. At this point, if I'm honest, I was getting bored with the book, and started to skip over paragraphs as soon as I saw the Author (Linda Michels) start to waffle on about more AKC (American Kennel Club) relevant stuff. I mean, even if this was a British book, and one that went into depth of the British Champions, etc, then I would have also glanced over that sections.Don't get me wrong, for pure show people, this book will be great for their shelves. But, for the average Rottweiler owner (like myself), I wasn't interested in the indepth showline pages. I have a Rottweiler purely as a pet and am not interested in showing or breeding. To some though, this books information on the various (in fact numerous pages) of bloodlines will be useful. But more so for the American reader, as this is whom it is aimed at.All in all, it's another Rottweiler book for my collection of dog books. Decent Rottweiler books are hard to source, and most (so far) just repeat the same information with one another. (I know it's hard to find new information, and you can't change the history). One nice thing about this book being American based, is the fact the all the Rottweilers are docked. It is pleasing to me personally to see a docked Rottweiler, as I think they conform better. Modern day Rottweiler owners who prefer to see their dogs 'with' tails may not like the photos in this book. But, I am part of the old school who prefers my dogs to be docked - as is my current imported Rottweiler. To me, they carry themselves better, and do not have the mish-mash of different tail carrying displays that the recent breeds have due to the laws on docking. Some undocked Rottweilers have drooping tails, some straight like a Labrador, and some carried high. It throws the lines of the dog off.For the price I paid for the book I cannot really complain about it. There are some nice photos, and a few parts which I found genuinely interesting. She covered the breeding side of things with a bit of humour, and dealt with the Euthanasia side of things nicely and not too 'in your face', although the facts were there.Would I recommend this book? Yes. For a Rottweiler owner, we can never have too many books on the breed. But I feel the writer let me down a bit by the title of the book. I would have called it: ''Rottweilers of America....how to join the club, show your dog and read an extensive list of Champions and all their titles'' (OTCH,Gr I-IV, CDX, MAJ etc etc etc)I've rated this book 3 stars. It loses 1 star for being too extensive in the Champion/title side of things, and loses another start for being American based (or biased), where a lot of the content is not relevant to the average man (or woman) on the street in the UK who owns one of these dogs just as a pet.
