Good book if you like carnage, but awful shipping
The book is ok, it's not a masterpiece but if you like carnage then its the book for you. It has some great art and it explores some cool takes on the character. The biggest downside is that each of the stories in the anthology is very small, too small to really get invested into anything, you are really just going to appreciate the story concept and the art. I would say it's like 4 stars if you like carnage. Now for the reason for the 2 start, Amazon's awful shipping. They shipped this to me in a paper envelope without any packing. Suffice it to say the book got to me absolutely destroyed, bent and creased on every corner, and so it was returned. Its not worth being at a good price if its just going to get to you damaged like this.In the end I ended up re purchasing it from a third party seller. If you want the book in good condition I would not recommend Amazon.

Closer to a 3.5 than a 2.5
This anthology is... definitely an anthology. There is one story explicitly connected to the greater whole of Marvel's comic world. It even has the classical asterisk and side note to let you know there are other books you need to read... This doesn't work in this book's favor.I bought this book, along with the other 2 "Black, White, And Red" books, based on learning James Stokoe has a story in the Deadpool book and some solid writers are involved in these books...The art throughout this book is solid. Each story has some pretty damn radical art. However... The writing...Most of these writers sure don't know how to write Cletus Kasady or Carnage, save being "edgy" and "shocking." There are a lot of choices in this book that serve only the purpose of being the kind of edgy you'd find on a t-shirt at Hot Topic or Hot Topic's overly-sexualized cousin, Spencer's Gifts. Each story seems to do what it wants with the lore around Carnage. I bought this book expecting to read about Carnage's various exploits, to learn more about the character, to see what else Carnage has been up to -- the last series I read before this with a heavy focus on Carnage was "Maximum Carnage," from the 90s...This book isn't what I expected whatsoever. The writing, in general, is lackluster - the first story really sets the bar quite low, as it doesn't make a lick of sense, nor does it have anything actually happen in it.On top of this, each story seems to eschew the actual lore around Carnage. For a recap: Venom is an alien that comes to Earth and bonds with Eddie Brock; some years (Is it days, weeks, or months? This doesn't actually matter, here, so just think "some time," please.) later, Venom gives birth to Carnage; Carnage bonds with Cletus Kasady. Most stories in this anthology change these elements to tell another version of Carnage's origin story. I hope to Genosha the other 2 "Black, White, And Red" books don't just retell the character's origin story in 30 different ways...This was an obnoxious read with some interesting bits and pieces and some solid artwork. If you're looking for a book with great artwork that tells random, "disconnected," retellings of Carnage's origin, this is for you.
