good to get you started on making your own swatches but not really the ideal resource
I kind of hate this book but I can honestly see its utility for the right dyer. The author uses no weight... so its impossible to reproduce the results exactly-- but I am not here to tell you you have to use a scale..use your measuring spoons if it makes you happy. I also don't think that the intention of the book was to give you an exact color recipes (how could it be?) I believe she wants you to use the book as a guide for making your own swatches...I'm not really clear on the whole thing. I do find it frustrating because even when I want to approximate her color I can't possibly scale up the authors recipes if I don't know how much her cloth weighed. We all know muslin, broadcloth etc are different weights per fat quarter...I can't even use this book if I try because I don't know how many teaspoons of dye solution to add if I'm dyeing three yards of white flannel! I do get an idea of how colors mix using the book but she uses an odd selection of dyes (using mixtures instead of pure dyes like tangerine instead of golden yellow when they are very similar colors) and shows no three color combos (if I recall correctly) which would have been really helpful. Its also not the most interesting selection of colors that she's showing you... The work at the end is pretty awful too...I am not quite sure how this author got to write this book-- Writing this review makes me want to give the book a one star review, but there's nothing else like it on the market and I honestly do flip through it, but I feel resentful while I do it!just in case you don't see the review about dye type this book is only relevant to MX dyes and for dyeing white cotton muslin fat quarters...trust me, if you don't know how to dye fabric this is not the book you should buy to learn, it doesn't really tell you that part.

Highly recommended! The only dying book you need for accurate colors!
This book is the best I have found for dying fabric. Please note: The author uses 100% cotton to dye her projects, while I use linen. The cotton absorbs dye at a different rate (generally a deeper color), so I have noticed the color is a little lighter than in the book. Not to worry ... the color values and tones are perfect! It is amazing how many colors this book shows you. I certainly did not know that if you put 3/4 blue and 1/4 orange the color is similar to a denim! The author shows you how you can dye 1/4 yard and 1 yard pieces. If you have more than 1 yard, just increase the recipe.Since I tend to dye 3 or more yards at a time, I picked up an old wringer washer that I use just for dying. This allows the colors to saturate the fabric. And if you are dying a piece of fabric, and the color is very light, chances are the fabric has polyester in it.I keep setting the book aside and finding it months later, so I have also purchased an electronic version of this book.I highly recommend this book to any person who wants to explore dying.

Beginners to advanced will get something from this book.
I was hesitant to buy this based on a couple of reviews but based on a another review which said the kindle version was not a mess (and its not) like some craft books can be, I got the Kindle ver. and Iโm very glad that I did. For beginners you could follow the steps and dye your first piece of fabric immediately. Clear easy to follow instructions that donโt have you running around buying expensive equipment and supplies. For advanced dyers she gives you some very interesting color profiles, a couple of which that are very poplular with my customers. As one reviewer mentioned she does use U.S. measure, tsp, tbsp, cup, etc., which is great for beginners trying to gather tools on the cheap but does make repeatability a challenge. If you need consistency as I do since I sell my fabric, doing the conversions to metric for repeatability is a must and very simple using Excel or even Google if you keep handwritten profiles.

excellent reference book
This book is an excellent guide for creating specific colors and color ranges with procion mx fiber reactive dyes. The book begins with a very brief outline of precautions, tools, how to mix the dyes and some general dye instructions and then moves right into the formulas for mixing colors. Formulas are calculated for dyeing fat quarters in 1 quart bags or 1 yard pieces in 1 gallon bags so if you work in different sizes than that you'll need to adjust the formulas accordingly. Chapters are broken down by colors; yellows, oranges, reds, purples, blues, greens and blacks and each chapter outlines how to dye clear and muted colors with ranges from dark to light and complementary cross. There's also a chapter on dyeing rainbows in clear dark/light and muted dark/light as well as some information on specialty techniques such as dyeing obre, twisting, layering and pleating and dipping. If you're working with cold water procion mx type fiber reactive dye and you want to be able to produce consistent color results then you'll find this book an invaluable reference.

If you use Procion dyes, you need this book.
Often the Kindle edition is not the same as the print version, which can be a problem with any book portraying colors. I was very undecided about purchasing the Kindle version vs. the paper version. However, since I may be moving again in the next year or so, I am trying to keep the amount of weight (and packing) down, so I went with the Kindle version. I'm glad I did, because the colors are very well represented. Oh, did I mention the color recipes are great? And the writing is clear and concise? The author has also included the information on several of the most commonly used dying techniques. Worth every cent! If you really want to have colors come out as you pictured them in your mind, you need this book,

Informative
I was thinking this book would tell me how to make any one of 900+ colors from basically 3 colors and black. It dosen't. I would have to buy say, several yellows, or several blues, or several greens, etc. And it doesn't tell you the name of any color made - just shows you a picture of the color and the formular. And we all know how colors show up differently on paper than they really are. But it does give very useful info a beginner dyer needs to know - and as for making the different colors, it will probably be trial and error for me - and hopefully a lot of beautiful mistakes...lol

This really is the only dyeing book you'll ever need!
I have a number of books on dyeing, most of them covering fabric paints with a few giving some information on fabric dyes. This book, however, is different. It's ALL about dye! It starts off giving basic dyeing information, but includes MX dye numbers as listed with Dharma and Pro Chemical, so you know exactly which colors the author uses to produce the results in the book. For example, if you were trying to mix a yellow-green, you know to use Dharma #1 or Pro Chemical #108, along with the other dyes to get the exact color you want - the guesswork has been eliminated! Plus, the mixing and dyeing take place in plastic bags, so you needn't have a whole dye room available - you can whip these colors up in the kitchen. The book is divided into color chapters, making it simple to find the color you want. Each individual mix is shown for making enough dye to cover from 1/4 yard to 1 yard of fabric, so the math is even done for you. Throughout the book are little "notes" with useful information about color mixing - things you should know, but probably don't know unless you've done a lot of dyeing. There are over 900 colors covered, ranging from muted shades to clear, dark to light, with extra information given for the blacks. The last chapter covers specialty techniques - how to produce an ombre, layering, using dry powder and others. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would! It will be the last book on dyeing that I purchase - it's all here.

a lot of experimenting still needed
This book does not give an entirely correct directions on how to get that perfect color you are looking for when dyeing fabrics. It gives a swatch of the color and below tells you the proportions of dye to use, but the proportions are wrong. The colors come out a lot darker then the swatch in the book. It is a good book to have as a reference for without the book I wouldn't have known to even mix these colors. Unfortunately It just requires a lot of experimenting still.

misleading
Although for some people this is probably a great book - the title is incredibly misleading! I bought this book as it said it is 'The only dye book you will ever need'. I am a textile designer, and wanted to know more about dyeing different fabrics, and to confirm what I already new. This book goes into great detail with regards creating different colours, which for some is probably invaluable, however, what it negates to say is that it is only for the use of procion dyes, which only dye silk and cotton. 'The only dye book you will ever need', I would expect it to also include dyeing wool and synthetic fabrics.I don't want to upset the author, as it is a beautifully presented book, however, as a designer with quite a lot of dyeing experience, wanting to know about the subject in more detail, I was incredibly disappointed. This book is more about mixing different colours using one type of dye, (which in my mind is very neglectful)than using different dye stuffs and techniques, which is what I exptected from the title and synopsis. If dyeing lots of different colours is what you want, then it is a beautiful book - but if you want to buy a book on how to dye - I would not recommend it.If the title was changed to fabric dyers dictionary of colours, using procion dyes, then maybe it would be ok.

Specializzato, ma troppo caro
Questo libro contiene buone indicazioni e consigli validi, ma non sempre le descrizioni sono precise. In ogni modo il prezzo di listino di 100$ o anche piรน รจ decisamente esagerato rispetto al contenuto.
