I never read Sherlock Holmes. Mostly I read history, political science or economics. But when I read fiction, I like a good mystery and I especially love the Victorian era. In fact, I never even watched the old black and whites with Basil Rathbone that my brother was always glued to. I had NO idea what I was missing. Not being a short story person per se, I've found myself engrossed in every one of the these. Mr. Doyle was a very creative, imaginative and prolific writer and while he's not the only one, I personally believe him to be the best when it comes to the short ones which I usually find boringly unimaginative and rarely read. Not so here. I absolutely Love this book and found myself as engrossed in reading them as my brother did in watching them. I don't have a favorite because I like them all and can see why some people have read them again. They are that good!The book is well organized with every story indexed. Amazon came up with a new font designed especially for the Kindle while I was reading this. I forget what it was called, but I downloaded it to try and it really does seem to make reading easier.I've three stories left in this book and then I'm off to purchase Volume II.

It was such a pleasure to revisit some of these classic tales again for the first time since my teenage days. In addition to being packed full of brilliant stories, I really liked the format of the book as well -- although it's thick (just over 1000 pages) it's small and compact, which is good because you won't be able to put it down and thus will end up taking it with you everywhere you go! At least I did.I saved the first two lengthier stories-- A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four-- for rainy evenings and started off with the shorter stories, which can be enjoyed "on the go", like bite-sized literary treats. Each tale is entertaining and captivating in its own way and the characters and situations are so brilliantly portrayed that you'll quickly forget you're reading fiction. Conan Doyle's writing style sweeps the reader back to the days of gas-lit London and makes you feel like you're right in the middle of everything that's happening.The chemistry between Watson and Holmes is just delicious and while each story has a serious element to it, there is lots of humour sprinkled throughout. I think "A Study in Scarlet" is one of Conan Doyle's finest achievements as a writer and held me captive until the wee hours of the morning, and that's the sort of thing you want in good fiction. Looking forward to devouring Volume II.

Thirty-six stories plus two of the four novels: that's more than half of the canon. All for seven bucks? We're talking about one of the classics of modern English literature. Even if it's been parodied and portrayed in more ways that you can shake a walking stick at, this collection still offers new readers the chance to discover a lifelong companion.True, the font size is not huge (they need to fit over a thousand pages into this book, after all!), but it's certainly very legible. In return you get a book that you can take anywhere, in an admittedly large pocket. There's actually a combined book (Volumes I & II) but it's more than two pounds (weight not price!). I like having Vols. 1 & 2 (complete set) of the Sherlock Holmes novels. Paperbacks are easy to transport and inexpensive. Nice to have these combined. I bought bought sets.

I'm so disappointed! I bought this a gift for my mom who absolutely adores Sherlock Holmes and for the book to come with some pages cut down. I can't give this away. Smh.

I first read Sherlock Holmes when I was six years old, and if you read him every ten years they are as good as new. (I'm now 64). Stern and arrogant, but fair he was: though concerning the Giant Rat of Sumatra he may have been a little reticent.The typeface is a bit too faint, but these novels and short stories excel in the Bantam editions because they are in chronological order. This makes it easier to understand "His Last Bow" for example.I purchased both volumes at the same time so this review serves for both.Conan Doyle gets all the credit! Try all the rest of his books.

The story as time has proved will engage and enthrall anyone.But the book is too cramped-the way the contents are printed- making ur reading experience a bit less enjoyable,amazon as usual has delivered its promises regarding the shopping experience to the mark..kudos on that regard.

The book looks way too good to be a photocopy of the original and way too cheaper to be a original one. Few months back ordered the Sherlock Holmes set of vol 1+2 of the same publisher.received a genuine copy but this one proves why one should think twice before placing the order judging such a low price.One star for the page mark that Amazon provided and another for the readable print on the super thin papers.Thanks.

I'm a fan of detective stories and was therefore extremely happy to find this collection of short stories about Sherlock Holmes. The writing is so good that you can paint a mental picture of Sherlock and from time to time get annoyed with his arrogance and the admiration of Watson. The mysteries are also not for the reader to be solved. One is merely invited to witness the conclusions of Sherlock's great minds. Although with some stories my guesses were pretty close to the truth. However, I'd recommend it to everyone who enjoys detective stories.
